| The Sames live in the north of Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia. It is a very little people - only 50.000. They live wide-spread in the mountain regions and only in a small area in Finnmarken (Norway) they are a majority. The Sames have adapted very much to the scandinacian way of life. In the beginning of the 1970's the Sames got global attention. Plans had come up to build a damm at the Alta-river. The damm-project also included the moving of a Same-settlement. This caused so big protests from Sames and sympathisers - and after a while it was hot news in the media. The norwegian government had to call it of. The case became a turning point for the Sames. They had found each other across the borders of the countries, and they became aware of their culture eventhough they don't live like Sames traditionally lived. Still the reindeer and their way of understanding nature is very essential to their culture. Today there are Same writers, television, songs.. and the Same-language and -culture is tought in certain schools. For EASA 1997 we have NOT made any appointments with Sames to dress out and meet us on a certain spot with their tents and reindeers. So if you want to meet them you will have to travel around yourself after EASA. |
